Welcome to the WaterSMART website. WaterSMART (Supplies Maintained and Ready Tomorrow) is a scientific research project that began in 1996 in Southern California and Arizona to preserve and protect water resources and provide a reliable and safe water supply through the use of recycled water. The project evaluated a natural water treatment process known as soil aquifer treatment, or SAT, to better understand how SAT purifies water and how sustainable these systems might be over time. This website provides information on SAT, what it is, how it works, and why it is an important tool for water resource management. The website also provides information on the WaterSMART project, what the project evaluated, who conducted and funded the research, where the research was conducted, and what the study found.
